The Blue Mountain Ranch is home to dozens of wildlife species.  Herds of mule deer, pronghorn antelope, and elk roam the hills and meadows of the ranch and retreat to the Ochoco Forest borders.  We offer seasonal hunting opportunities including:

Rifle Buck Antelope

Antelope hunts are conducted throughout the 9 day controlled season. The ranch is located within the Ochoco Unit and is home to several herds of antelope throughout the year. The ranch provides numerous opportunities for hunters to locate/harvest a quality buck “billy” antelope of their choosing. Hunters have been 100% successful to date. Antelope hunters must apply for and obtain a controlled centerfire permit through Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Draw System. Hunters will apply for controlled hunt #437 (One Buck Pronghorn). Applications are due May 15, 2018.

Hunts are $1000 per person.

Archery Elk

Archery elk hunts are conducted during the last two weeks of the general hunting season when the bulls are most active. This provides hunters with increased opportunities to harvest their trophy animal. The ranch is located within the Ochoco Unit and is home to several elk herds. Archery hunters must apply for and obtain a controlled archery permit through Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Draw System. Hunters will apply for hunt # 237R1 (Any Elk) or hunt #237R2 (Bull Elk) for their 1st choice and hunt #237R1 Landowner Preference Tag or hunt #237R2 Landowner Preference Tag for their 6th choice. Applications are due May 15, 2018. Please contact us prior to applying and we can assist you.

*Note: This is not a combination elk/deer hunt and no time will be spent hunting specifically for deer. However, if a buck mule deer having 3 or more points on 1 side is encountered, a hunter possessing the appropriate license/tag may harvest the deer for a trophy fee of $1700. A wounded deer will be considered a harvest, even if it is not located.


Rifle Buck Mule Deer

Rifle deer hunts are conducted throughout the two week controlled season. Hunters will experience a true western mule deer hunt and will spend a significant amount of time glassing in an effort to locate their trophy buck. The ranch is located within the Ochoco Unit and is home to a several stable mule deer herds. Hunters should see several quality bucks during this hunt and hunts have been over 90% successful with nearly 100% opportunity. Quality management is paramount to the success of the mule deer at Blue Mountain Ranch. The ranch has implemented a management program requiring all adult hunters to harvest mule deer having a minimum of 3 points on 1 side (guides may make an exception for management bucks). Any adult hunter who chooses to harvest a buck having less than 3 points (unless otherwise approved) will be charged an additional $500 management fee. Rifle deer hunters must apply for and obtain a controlled centerfire permit through Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Draw System. Hunters will apply for controlled hunt #137 for their 1st choice and for hunt #137 Landowner Preference Tag under their 6th choice. Cow elk may also be hunted/harvested during the deer hunt for a fee of $600.  Hunter’s must possess a ranch obtained depredation tag or must apply for controlled hunt #237B (Crooked River). Rifle Bull Elk

Rifle elk hunts are conducted during the first and second controlled seasons. The behavior of the elk is weather dependent; however, the elk are often vocal and can be located moving to and from agricultural pivots/food sources. Numbers of elk on the ranch can vary; however, hunters normally have opportunities to harvest quality bulls. The ranch is located within the Ochoco Unit and is home to several elk herds. Rifle elk hunters must apply for and obtain a controlled centerfire permit through Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Draw System. Hunters will apply for their 1st choice to controlled hunt #237X (hunt #1) or #237Y (hunt #2). Hunters should also apply for 2nd choice hunt #237C1 (hunt #1) or #237C2 (hunt #2) and 6th choice hunt #237X Landowner Preference Tag (hunt #1) or hunt #237Y Landowner Preference Tag (hunt #2). Applications are due May 15, 2018. Please contact us prior to applying and we can assist you.

Cow Elk

Rifle cow elk hunts are conducted on an as available/on-call basis from August-December. A waiting/on-call list will be established each year for hunters who are interested. Hunts for cow elk are scheduled so as not to interfere with our archery/rifle elk and rifle deer hunts. Hunts will only be conducted when abundant numbers of elk are on the ranch. These hunts have run 100% success. Rifle elk hunters must apply for and/or obtain a controlled centerfire permit through Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife’s Draw System. Hunter’s will apply for controlled hunt #237B (Crooked River). Depredation tags may also be available through the ranch. Applications are due May 15, 2018.

Sage Rats

Sage rat hunts are conducted throughout the Spring/Summer. These hunts are semi-guided, meaning hunters will be shown several hunting areas and allowed to hunt these areas as desired.

Waterfowl

Waterfowl hunts are conducted from November – January. Hunts are scheduled on a first come/first-served basis. These hunts are semi-guided, meaning hunters will be shown several hunting areas and allowed to hunt these areas as desired. Hunters must provide their own equipment (decoys, retriever’s, etc.). The ranch has abundant numbers of waterfowl throughout the latter part of the season due to the availability of open water/forage. Hunters can jump shoot or decoy waterfowl from the fields, creeks, ponds, and sloughs.

ALL HUNTS AT BLUE MOUNTAIN RANCH ARE FAIR CHASE FOR TRULY WILD GAME. WE PROVIDE ALL CLIENTS WITH THE OPPORTUNITY TO HUNT SPECIFIC GAME ANIMALS IN THEIR NATURAL ENVIRONMENTS. WHILE IT IS OUR GOAL THAT EACH CLIENT HARVESTS THE TROPHY THEY SEEK, WE CANNOT GUARANTEE THESE HUNTS.

ALL FULLY GUIDED HUNTS INCLUDE PROPER CLEANING, SKINNING, TRANSPORTATION, AND TROPHY CARE OF THE HARVESTED GAME ANIMAL(S). SEMI-GUIDED HUNTERS MAY RECEIVE ASSISTANCE ON REQUEST, DEPENDING ON AVAILABILITY OF RANCH REPRESENTATIVES.

DEPENDING ON THE WEATHER-CURRENT TEMPERATURES, MEAT MAY BE HUNG/STORED ON THE RANCH FOR NO COST. A MEAT COOLER IS AVAILABLE JUST OFF OF THE RANCH IN THE TOWN OF PAULINA. MEAT CAN BE STORED IN THE COOLER FOR A REASONABLE RATE OF $8-10 PER DAY.

ALL HUNTERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE TRANSPORT/PROCESSING/TROPHY CARE OF HARVESTED GAME AFTER THE HUNT CONCLUDES. THE RANCH CAN RECOMMEND LOCAL GAME PROCESSORS AND TAXIDERMISTS ON REQUEST.

 


Lodging

All hunters should arrive the afternoon prior to their scheduled hunt. Hunters will be lodged in a comfortable climate controlled bunkhouse equipped with bedrooms/beds, toilets/showers, full kitchen, and dining/relaxation areas. The bunkhouse is located at the ranch and allows immediate access to available hunting areas. Hunter’s must supply their own bedding/sleeping bags and all toiletries.

Hunters wishing to stay in a personal camper, trailer, or RV may do so. The ranch has full RV hookups available to guests. Hunt pricing remains the same, regardless of the chosen accommodations.
